MENU Flying Futures

Earlier this month we announced the official formation of the 5 Star Active Northern Hub – a formal partnership between Flying Futures CIC, Richard Fahey Racing and Harrowells Limited.

The 5 Star Active Northern Hub is now in a position to officially launch the #TakeTheReins17 programme alongside their ambassador, Adam McNamara, who aims to increase awareness and promote employability within the horseracing industry. Adam hopes the programme will help young people in a similar way that working on the yard helped him at a young age. He says it will “provide opportunities for young people to learn about the industry and experience working on the yard”. He hopes the programme will “help young people make more informed decisions about their future career prospects and help them better understand the opportunities available to them within the industry”.

#TakeTheReins17 will run from now until the end of the year and comprises of four main initiatives to help achieve the aims outlined above.

Give and Gain Day – this is a volunteer day, where young people will get the opportunity to visit industry related venues including; Richard Fahey’s training centre, Musley Bank Yard, where Adam also conducts his duties as a jockey.

Work Experience – young people will have the opportunity to gain ‘hands-on’ experience of working on a yard. This will provide them with first hand insight into what it’s really like to live the life of a stable hand – early mornings included! Moreover, participants will learn about the industry and the career possibilities it presents.

Community Outreach – A group of young people will undertake community outreach work, under the 5 Star Active Northern Hub banner. They will share their experiences and learning from the programme itself with the wider community, promoting the opportunities that exist within the industry, as well as, the valuable work being undertaken by local racing charities.

Celebration – Now that the young people have been exposed to the range of alternative career opportunities within the racing field – some of which could be overlooked without experiencing them in person- and learned about the intricacies involved in making the day a success!, they will get the chance to celebrate in true racing style.

Our first leg, Give and Gain Day, kicks off on the 21st April at Musley Bank Yard. Young people from across North Yorkshire and East Riding will #TakeTheReins17 and come together for a day of volunteering and knowledge sharing. Check back with us at the end of the month for a full breakdown of the day and the activities involved.
