After much deliberation and planning it was decided by the group of young people that one of the NCS social action projects would be delivered at door 84.
The project which was to be delivered was broken down into 2 parts. The first part was to help out at Door 84’s play day which was a huge success and the second part was to revamp the garden in the playground area.
At the play day, the participants of NCS needed to help set up all the stalls, climbing wall, and music system for the day. Heidi, from Door 84, briefed all the volunteers and everyone chose what they wanted to do throughout the day.
After an hour of getting set up we reached the official start time and the public started to drift in and the day got underway.
The participants were excellent throughout the day on the stalls and especially the those working at climbing wall and the bike stalls. The guys on the climbing wall were pretty much running it, they were encouraging and reassuring anybody who was nervous or stuck. The boys on the bike stall were keeping things running smoothly, with all the people walking about and 3 mini bikes moving all around, it was a recipe for disaster but the guys did fantastic to keep everyone safe and injury free!
We also had a couple of people keeping the music mix going strong throughout the day too and was that impressive that one of them has been asked to DJ at an up and coming party event being held in York.
Door 84 put on a fantastic day and our volunteers loved being part of it and I know some are already talking of getting involved with Door 84 on a regular basis. They conducted themselves excellently throughout and gave a wonderful impression of the youth of today and what they can contribute towards their communities.
The second part of the social action was the revamp of the Snappy garden and other surrounding areas.
Whilst most of the group started to put the base coat onto the walls that were getting a makeover, the artistic ones of the group were busy planning the design that was to go onto the walls.
The guys came up with a fairy tale like design with different characters to go on the wall and the Snappy area was to have the logo of Snappy painted on to it with all the plant pots and beds in front of it re painted and tidied up.
They also came up with an idea for another wall we had to work on to put Door84’s & NCS logos onto it and allow the Youth centre to put hand prints onto it of the members of the centre.
Once we had all the designs in place, the group set about the refurbishment breaking up into smaller groups so the work would get done quicker.
The art work being put onto the uneven walls was fantastic especially Bambi and the Snappy logo.
As the nights passed the project started to take shape some excellent work was being turned out buy all the group. The walls were looking brilliant and the plant pots and beds were looking amazing painted in bright colours. We also painted the shed too so it doesn’t look out of place now!
The group finished the project off by planting a variety of plants creating a little herb garden for everyone to use. Everyone was really impressed with what they had achieved and Snappy gave us a thank you card for the work the group had done to the garden area.
All the group worked tirelessly to complete the project and showed excellent teamwork and at times had to motivate others to get the task finished.
During the social action projects at Door 84 the group have been allowed to develop new skills and build up relationships with people who they maybe wouldn’t get the opportunity to normally. The projects have allowed the group to get a feel of the volunteering that takes place at Door 84 and encourage some of the group to get involved with volunteering at Door 84 in the near future.
Delivering these projects at Door 84 have also given the community a sustainable project to maintain and also allows us to build up a working relationship with Door84 in the future to help out with any events or clubs they have set up with our volunteers from NCS.
Thank you to all at Door 84 for allowing us to deliver this project and a massive congratulations to all the guys who worked on this, you have been superb throughout and you should be proud of your achievements.
It was a pleasure to work with you all and a huge well done from all the NCS staff.
